Still-room still-life
Portraits of the molden, rotten and dried food stocked up to our storage rooms during the lockdown.
Fine art photographs of tomatoes, potatoes, figs, limes, pears, apples all in rotten, eroded condition, as consequence of stocked up food in our storage rooms during the lockdown.
Photographed on isolated background in self quarantine, than developed by the photographer in person using VanDyke brown process to immortalize decay and to create bridge between traditional and new, between digital and analogue, between permanence and transience.
The lockdown started and I was sitting at home just like the rest of humanity. Watching the news made me realise how fleeting we all are. This conclusion was even more obvious when I realised nature took over my storage, and all the stocked up food was covered with mildew, and there’s nothing to do just sit and watch how natural processes consume us.
Capturing this destructive process, gives us the ability to see from a new perspective something that we are taking for granted. I started photographing how nature claimed my still room to highlight the general problem of over-consuming and overproduction. I took photos of tomatoes, potatoes, figs, limes, pears all in rotten, eroded condition, portraying them on an isolated background in the form of still-lifes that evoke moods known from old herbariums.
Later came to me the idea to present result by the Van Dyke brown method to challenge the decay with old chemical process.
All subjects was photographed with Nikon D500 between April and July 2020. Artworks was developed by VanDyke brown process, then reprographed with PhaseOne in October 21, 2020
